The 2017 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index measures “the set of factors and policies that enable the sustainable development of the travel and tourism sector, which in turn, contributes to the development and competitiveness of a country”. It is issued by the World Economic Forum and ranked countries based on several pillars.
The UAE ranked 29th globally out of 136 countries but more importantly, it ranked 2nd in terms of safety and security with a 6.6 score behind Finland and ahead of Iceland. Oman and Qatar also ranked in the top 10 safest countries in the world.
The UAE also ranked 15th in ICT readiness (1st in mobile coverage), 1st in Government prioritization of travel and tourism industry, 1st in Sustainability of travel and tourism industry development, 2nd in Quality of air transport infrastructure, 1st in quality of roads, 1st in Quality of tourism infrastructure and 5th in Business environment rankings.
